To serve journalism and its public by facilitating access to information, protecting the privileges of journalists and ensuring conformity with the code of ethics, accredit journalism training and carry out capacity building, documentation and research on press development and provide the cheapest and effective means of adjudication for complains between journalists and the public.

The Nigerian Press Council (NPC) is a parastatal established by the Nigerian Press Council Act No: 85 of 1992 as (amended in Act 60 of 1999) to ensure the maintenance of high professional standards for the Nigerian Press. Like most other Press Councils around the world, the functions of the Nigerian Press Council revolve around ethical standards.

Our Mandate

Enquire into complaints about the press and the conduct of any person or organisation towards the press

Receiving applications from, and documenting the print media and monitoring their performance to ensure that owners and publishers comply with the terms of their mission statements and objectives in liaison with the Newspaper Proprietors Association of Nigeria

Monitoring the activities of the press with a view to ensuring the compliance with code of professional and ethical conduct of the Nigeria Union of Journalists

Ensure the protection of the rights and privileges of journalists in the performance of their duties benefit.

Research into contemporary press development and engage in updating press documentation

Review development likely to restrict the flow of information and advice on measures aimed at remedying such developments

Accreditation of programs for journalism training institutions

Defence of press freedom
